Lions and tigers and ... bongos? Oh my!
Jul 10, 2023

We've had a great 2 days at Western Plains Zoo checking out all the amazing animals. We were particularly excited to be joined by our family Jen, Charlie, Leigh and Nicola for this beginning leg of the adventure - a nice way to ease into our time on the road.
For the first day at the zoo we jumped on bike for a whole lot of riding to see the animals, whereas today we took it a bit easier in the cars, with a little paddle boat action at the very end. The meerkats were a favourite amongst the kids, whereas Charlie and I were both really into the bongos - they're so cool looking! We got to see some great water frolicking, by animals both big (hippos!) and small (otters!), as well as enjoy keeper talks about the cheetahs and the Sumatran tigers, although they were a bit heavy on the breeding talk for the kids 🤣. But I'm pretty sure the definite star of the visit was the baby white rhino, who was just the cutest thing EVER!!
This afternoon we headed into town to visit Old Dubbo Gaol, which definitely lived up to all of the good reviews I had heard. A particular highlight was the tour on escape attempts which was run by a very entertaining young lass who was 110% committed to her role - she even inspired Toby to have a go at improv, which was very entertaining to watch!
After another lovely dinner with the cousins (and another Kung Fu Panda movie) we got the kids to bed and we've done some prep work for our next departure, having already learnt some packing lessons from the first few stops. But we've also managed to spread out across this very generous 3 bedroom cabin, and pick up a few extra items (like a water filter jug, as apparently Toby and I are both very fussy about our tap water!!). Fingers crossed we can get it all packed away tomorrow 🤞

Meerkats - so cute!

Meerkats - so cute!

Cheetah and tiger - also very cute!

Cousins on a hippo - even cuter!

A BABY RHINO - THE CUTEST THING EVER!!!

The bongos we saw at the zoo weren't particularly cooperative when it came to getting a good photo, so I stole one from the interwebs. So cool!

He's so rugged and manly with his travel coffee mug

But riding Josie around in the caboose wasn't easy!
